First hurdle...

Oberhausen.jpg...first fall.

There is no love for Luci at this years Oberhausen .  This is, of course, disappointing.  However, it's not all doom and gloom round theses parts as the fantastic Plane Days, directed and shot by Ben Kracun (DP on I Love Luci) & Ewan McNicol, is in competition there so we are very pleased that a close friend has secured a place.

If you would like to see Plane Days it is screening at the London International Documentary Festival (LIDF) on 29th March

I recommend it, it's a gem:

Hi Colin - it was nice to talk to you a few posts back - sorry I've been slow to get back to your blog - life being what it is on my end . . .

Anyways - sorry to hear Luci is not to be included - though it is very gracious of you to congratulate a colleague who did get in. Am I correct that short films are largely reliant on film fests/competitions such as this to get themselves seen by the public? When one sets out to make a short - such as you with Luci - what is the marketing plan - if that's the right way to think of it - in terms of raising money to fund the project in the first place? Obviously very different from feature length films?

It seems similar to the problem of one-act plays in my world. There are a lot of great one-acts but theatre companies rarely want to do them because they aren't a full evening's entertainment & therefore not marketable. They tend to have to rely on one-act play festivals.

Just a bit curious.

Best to you,
Anna

Hi Anna

Short film festivals are generally the way a film finds it's audience in this instance but there are also TV rights for round the world as well so we would be hoping to have sales as well. There are of course rights for other media too and whether or not your film gets picked up for short film DVD collections or for internet distribution will have a big effect on the profitability of the film - this interest is largely kicked off by the films success at festivals so they are very important for the life of your film.

I am not bummed out by the fact we didn't get into Oberhausen, it would have been nice but there are many other festivals around the world and we didn't even submit a completed film so our chances were hampered from the start.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you - I always do manage it in the end though!

All best

Colin
