Frivolous Writing

I am very aware that my writing of the blog from Cannes has been nothing short of frivolous and far from illuminating. There is cause for this.

Frivolous video from Rue d'Antibes

While Cannes is stuffed to the gunwhales with parties and events and publicity stunts of all kinds from scantily clad babes emblazoned with promo to mobile techno clubs on pick up trucks, the bulk of what is done here is firmly rooted in deep seriousness.

The reason we have been here is to meet people, get their reactions on various projects and strike up relationships for a variety of aspects of the film making process from funding for development to sales and distribution and everything in between. The act of reporting on our progress on an individual project basis is not a tenable idea.

As readers of this blog will know I have often spoken of the fragility of the business of putting the enormous jigsaw of components together for a film. This problem is at its most true in the early stages of a films life. So it has not been practical for me to speak about who we have been meeting with and what we have been discussing. What I can say is that we have had a lot of very interesting meetings and discussed a number of projects with some very interesting people. So there you go, once again, not very illuminating but at least explained. This also points to us bringing you some exciting stuff in the near future.

Hallam Foe is released on the 31st August in the UK and as we all know there is always a lot of fuss surrounding the opening of a film and I can tell you this will be no different. Although the details of how all this is going to manifest itself are still to be decided the BVI gang have some cool ideas that will unfold over the summer.

For those of you in the States you know we had a great meeting with the gang from Magnolia so we expect good things from them. I will try and find out more from the other territories that have sold about what is planned for the rest of the world.

As the fruits of the Cannes labour become apparent I'll fill you in. In the meantime, I'm afraid my lips are sealed.

Look left

It's very easy to get run over here if you come from a country where they drive on the left, particularly if you've had a couple of sweet sherry's at some glam bash...

La Croisette

This place is bonkers, lots and lots and lots of people all talking about making films, you gotta love it... apart from one guy I met who has come here on holiday, nothing to do with the film business at all and even he was having a great time.

je retourne...

...pour une semaine seulment, the duration of our stay at the Cannes film festival.

Day One: airport bar 6hours, board flight, know air stewardess, get well looked after, taxi a Cannes s'il vous plait, arrive at ridiculously opulent Scarface style pad cunningly disguised as garage, marvel and depart, consume first goose liver and bottle of rose of the trip so far, invent new phallic drink cooler called the Chilldo, retire to bar, order beer and repeat until marinated whilst catching up with numerous dignitaries of the film world and trying to adjust to the madness that is the Petit Majestic circa 2a.m. Bed around 5.
