Hotel Du Cap

For all those who like a decadent nosh up this post is for you. The ceviche de daurade is highly recommended by the way.

While we were there so were Harvey Weinstein and Kirstine Dunst, the latter I didn't recognise and unfortunately subjected to a rather undignified strip as I was determined not to be left out of a dip in the Cotes D'Azur simply because one my arms wasn't working.

Sorry Kirtsine, I promise not to flash you again, but you were in Europe and we're not quite so easily offended by that sort of thing this side of the deep blue.

Update

I have updated Red Road red carpet with some shots. There are still a few missing, I am waiting to get them from people I haven't seen for a while. They will come though.

We had another screening of the film the other day, I still haven't seen it, but the mood remains good. So the edit is some contrast to the shoot! Although of course we had a our good days on the shoot and a lot of fun amongst our hard work it seems that it has gained somewhat of a reputation.

Over the last few days I have been out on location shooting a short film, see Spreading the good word, and the word on the Scottish filmmaking circuit is that HF was a tough one. Oddly, all the difficulties we faced have become part of the rose tinted haze that is now my memory of the 6 weeks we spent shooting. There's a bizarre satisfaction in knowing that it is now gaining a reputation for having been a hard job ('You poor bastard.' was one quote I got in response to hearing that I'd worked on it).

I am still trying to get hold of the trailer we toook to Cannes, and there is another one that BVI have now, although that will be sometime in being viewed I think. We should be able to get a sneak preview here though.

Red Road red carpet

*photo removed by request*

Gillian Berrie and Lars Von Trier came up with an idea a few years ago to make 3 films with the same cast / characters all to be directed by first time directors, it is called Advance Party and the other two will be directed by Morag Mackinnon and Mikkel Norgaard. Andrea Arnold's film is the first to be completed, Red Road.

Kate Dickie in Red Road

Just a few weeks before Cannes Andrea heard that her film had been accepted for competition. She added the finishing touches and headed for the south of France with her film and a load of the Sigma / Zentropa team in tow.

Next stop for the gang was the red carpet. Dressed to the nines, filled with excitement, and not a little champagne, we headed up the red carpet in anticipation of seeing the movie.

Of course, it was brilliant!

It was also very interesting to watch from the point of view of having just worked on Hallam Foe. Red Road is also a film with a strong voyeuristic vein but made very differently from HF. The observational PoV in Red Road is from security cameras trained on the streets of a high-rise estate in Glasgow. This is beautifully achieved in Red Road and not solely reliant on capturing the sensational side of life but also the poetic, which gives Andrea's film a wonderful balance and makes the story that much more poignant. Anyway, I am no film critic so you can read reviews elsewhere, but this is one to watch. Go make your own mind up.

Here's some shots of the Govan Young Team / Sigma and pals swaggering up the shagpile and shaking it on the dancefloor...

Once you're in the cinema you can watch all your pals coming up the red carpet on the big screen, this is pretty cool.

The cinema holds something ridiculous like 2000 people, it is mammoth.
